The Beginning of Patch & Denim
Share
Patch & Denim was originally thought up to be a mama denim and baby quilt shop-- although the denim idea grew a lot faster. The first quilt I ever made was six months after having my first child. It was a Lonestar quilt-- which a lot of quilters told me I was very "ambitious" to start out with a quilt like that. It was certainly challenging at times, but I got through it and fell in love with the pattern.
My sister in laws birthday is in May, a day before my sons birthday and the first quilt (photo) I made was for her daughters first birthday— so I wanted to make her something special that matched it. I thought about making a lonestar patch, without having to make a quilt out of it. So I got to the drawing board and tested out some smaller sized stars. It took me a few tries to really get the right size and shape (math and measuring aren’t my strong suit) but I finally got it right.
Then the hard part: how was I going to get this fragile cotton star onto a stiff, thick material like denim? Again, a ton of trail and error (that’s what creating is all about, right?) My sewing machine has a ton of different stitches so I ran through a ton of them and landed on #4– a sort of zig zag pattern that really secures the star to the jacket.
And that, in short, is how Patch & Denim came to be.
It’s been about two and a half years since it all began and I’ve made over a hundred and sixty jackets in counting and have orders coming in weekly. I’m in love with this craft and I can’t wait to see what is to come!
